EDITORIAL

In the 1970s, caravans were a symbol of escape, personal freedom, and mobility, primarily for the white American middle class. In contrast, African Americans of that time also aspired to these ideals, while facing much greater racial and economic obstacles.

Thus, the 1970s were marked by contrasts in American culture. While the caravan and travel represented a form of the American dream for some, African Americans were still struggling for the recognition of their rights and fair representation in society.

This photo series is a reminder of history.
